The intranet is a tool that has the ability to impact your whole organisation. Unlike a website it knows who you are, which department you belong to and may even understand the actions you need to take to achieve your objectives. With these insights it can add value in ways you may not have even imagined when you first started the project. These days people work at times that are convenient to them. The intranet delivers a way for employees to connect with each other and with the business. Even the remotest of remote workers can access the intranet and see what others are doing as well as share information and insights they with others.

  • Provide a searchable contacts directory that helps people get to know their colleagues interests or skills. I have seen this used to identify trained first aiders, French language speakers or people interested in the running club.

Intranets improve efficiency by saving your employees time and reducing wastage. It can save time by giving staff access to the information they need quicker as well as automating once manual processes. When we are looking to identify opportunities for the intranet to improve efficiency we often try and find the spreadsheet. As a general rule, anytime when anyone keeps a spreadsheet to keep track of a task is a process that can be optimised.

The intranet also reduces wastage and can be as simple as centralising processes (such as stationary ordering). It does this by sharing information so that decisions can be made in full knowledge of the facts.
